University exams and relative hurdles

A discussion in the office turned to where people went to school and how you get into a school.  Admission here is almost solely your GPA – not like in the U.S. where it is rounded out by essays, etc.  There is a secondary national exam in that some courses (which count toward your GPA) have a national exit exam that determines what grade you get.

Schools have GPA hurdles to get in, but as I understand it those hurdles vary by gender and race.  Med schools are competitive, and it is most difficult to get in as an Indian female and easiest as a black female.  The way they do this is by changing the GPA hurdle – perhaps a 97 for Indian females and an 85 for black females.  Each year this is adjusted based on what sort of class the previous years’ hurdles resulted in.
