Nigeria going green? Maybe. I got into a conversation with a professor at a local university whose focus is green power. He said there is a lot going on in Nigeria with solar and wind power because they bring some energy stability (as opposed to the spotty grid). Diesel generator power is expensive, and one barrier to multinationals entering the country is the spotty power service.

In the U.S., the motivation to go green is “warm fuzzies” at a minimum and the prospect of a 5-10 year cost breakeven period at best. In Nigeria, you have the same motivations except a) the return period is shorter because the cost of power is more expensive when considering the high cost of diesel generation, and b) there is the very practical motivation of a dependable power source. It may make more sense for a Nigerian manufacturer to have rooftop solar than a U.S. household.
