Can you see why Kiwis like to vacation here?On Friday we spent most of the day walking part of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track. It is one of the “Great Walks,” a set of NZ hikes (“tramps” here) that take several days and cover beautiful scenery. We just hiked a portion of it, but it took us past several beaches and a big tidal flat while the tide was out.

A duck walks past a log stranded on a tidal flat.
The barnacles on the rocks indicated the tide lines, but interspersed in the barnacles were thousands of tiny sea snails with beautiful blue shells. Each was no bigger than a poppy seed. There were also lots of mussels, and crabs skittered around on the sand.
That afternoon we drove to Nelson and ended up just lazing away the rest of the afternoon at our holiday park. I walked around a tidal flat with John and we also checked out a public BMX course. I talked about public skate parks before (they are ubiquitous), but this is the first public BMX course I have seen.
The road to Nelson followed the coast and was once again filled with windy switchbacks. It gave great views of the ocean. I clocked us on one stretch and we averaged 30 kph (about 20 mph). The posted speed limit is 100 kph.
