Self-imposed isolation

Following on my previous post, I continue to be surprised by the voluntary isolation of South Africans. Hiding behind walled compounds is one expression, but it manifests itself in other ways. One of the big things to do here is take a tour of a township (usually Soweto) to get a flavor for where black culture in Africa grew during apartheid as well as the living conditions. However, I’ve met multiple South Africans my age who have never been in a township, period. I’ve even gone to an Orlando Pirates soccer game in a township.  Echoing something I've noted earlier, most South Africans have traveled very little even around their neighboring countries.
